Comment: Excellent and easily readable site. Read the obituary on David Gunter which is very sad. I was directed to the site for the 'message in a wallet' item. Wishing the club every success. Colin Duncan. (Brecon) District Governor 105W

Comment: We reached Tanjore today Diwali (India Christmas day) so that the roads were very clear. Unknown in this part of the world. We visited the Red Fort Temple, the 19th Century St John Churh and the Sri Ranganathasvami Temple all in Trichy. These are magnificent sites. The rains came again at 5pm as usual just as we were checking into our hotel in Tanjore along side the river. The food is great and the accommodation superb. Tomorrow we visit another temple and at long last we have a free afternnon to sample the pool. Will email tomorrow Regards FT

Comment: Dear All Enjoyed a half days rest after many days of constant travel. The torrential rain of yesterday has now gone but it is very hot and humid. Today we visited the Brihadishwara Temple in Tanjore built by the Chola king in 1010. This is a Unesco World Heritage monument. Afterwards we visited the Tanjore Palace which is now a museum of Art. We spent the afternoon by the pool. The hotel is alongside a river so we have to contend with a fair numer of mosquitos. Tonight we dined in the hotel on local river fish/prawns.

Comment: Travelled today from Tanjore to Pondicherry. We visited the temple of Brihadishwara Temple at Darasuram on the way but is not visited by many people. The Priest allowed us right up to the altar of the God an honour normally only allowed to Hindus. After we to the home of a silk weaver. We also went to a school where they make bronze castings and the process explained. The heavy rains continue spoiling the rice crops in the fields, the roads were flooded in places but we got here safely. The cyclone Jal is due to hit us tomorrow and is 300 miles off shore but losing force (we hope!). Stopping at a hotel in the French Quarter and will visit the old town of Pondicherry tomorrow before moving on to Covelong. Regards F T

Comment: Today we toured old French Pondicherry and journeyed to Covelong. Cyclone Jal has now passed and today has been very hot. The flood waters are dropping but in parts some roads still closed and some of the local population still moved to places of safety. The dam on th River Cauvery at 51ft and overtops at 52 ft. The Hotel is right on the coast with a very long clean sandy beach and big rolling waves. We have been in the pool as the sea is still too rough with warning flags flying. Food excellent and tonight we have wet the baby's head as our friends who are with us have just become one star grandparents. We see the local sights tomorrow before moving on to Mumbai. Comment: Today we went to Mahabalipuram to visit the monuments of the Pallava Kings these are unbelievable monolithic statues and temples. The most impressive are known as the 5 rathas and comprise 5 individual statues carved from 1 piece of granit about 60 metres long carved 1500 years ago. We also visited one remaining shore temple but 4 others were discovered below sea level following the tsunami a few years ago. Returning to Covelong we encountered a Lions Village Colony established after the local fishing village of 42 houses at Pudukemmelli was destroyed by the tsunami. We talked to a local villager who was immensely grateful to Lions International for the new village. Tonight is a farewell dinner before we part company with Kate & Paul. We continue from Mumbai tomorrow. FT

Comment: Arrived safely in Mumbai after a short flight from Chennai (Madras) yesterday afternoon. Mumbai is very busy and the traffic overwhelming. Last evening we visited the local school at Sarhar Village run by the Sisters of the Handmaids of the Blessed Trinity. The school is closed for Diwali at the moment and we were shown around by the Sister in charge. The water well gives me major concern as there is no filter/sterilization plant to render the water fit for drinking. We are looking into what can be done to improve matters. The school has about 400 children and these live and are taught in very cramped conditions. We were able to deliver lots of clothes' for the children when they return also a donation towards operational costs. Today we travel about 75 km outside Mumbai to the district of Vesai to the orphanage run by the Sisters called Sapodi Wadi. Regards F T

Comment: Earlier today at Sapodi Wadi in Vasai we met about 50 very young children who have no relatives to go home to for Diwali 110 children who were able to go to a relative are due back soon. The orphanage is being extended to accommodate the elder children and a new building is nearly finished. We were warmly welcomed by the sisters and children alike. We are on our own now will be touring Mumbai. The weather here is very hot and humid and the city is very dusty. We are located close to the airport so have we to travel into the city centre. The roads are very congested and India drives on the same side of the road as we do, but that is where the similarity ends. There seem to be no rules of the road to which we are accustomed. We will let you know how we get on later.

Comment: This is our last bulletin before we return to the Uk. Today we followed the usual travellers route around town. We had a wonderful taxi driver who took us all over the place. We visited the Dhobi Ghat Laundry - the biggest outdoor laundry in the world, then onto Ghandi's House via local markets. We stopped at the magnificent VT Railway terminal and the Gateway to India. The Taj International Hotel and the Oberoi have now been fully restored and are looking magnificent again. We visited the Anglican Church of St John established in 1858 by the British Army with all components shipped out from England including the 8 large bells cat at Bow in London. A visit to the Jehangir Art Gallery came next with works of artists from many countries. After a morning coffee stop we had an extended tour of the Prince of Wales Museum. We ruturned along the Marine Drive onto the new Marine Toll Highway bridge that will eventually provide the city with a ring road via the bay. See you soon FT

Comment: Dear Flint Lions It is great to be back in the UK from India although it is quite cold in comparison, about 30 deg C colder. We we most impressed by the Lions organisation in India with lots of evidence of active community involvement throughout the South of India. In many states the Lions sponsor the building bus shelters on the main highways. Essential protection in the hill regions where rainfall is immense by our standards. In the Tsunami areas Lions have been instrumental in rebuilding villages and communities all along the coast. A great achievement in a difficult and poor environment. It makes you feel great to be a Lion. Regards F T
